Law Professor and Legal Advisor Sujit Choudhry

Sujit Choudhry, who was born in New Delhi, India, became the first person from that country to be named as the dean of the University of California’s Berkeley School of Law, which is considered to be one of America’s top law universities. He held the dean position at Berkeley from 2014 to 2016, then later went on to become a law professor at the school. He received his legal training at the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar and earned a BA degree. He also received law degrees from the University of Toronto and Harvard Law School. Because of all of his years and experience in the field of Constitutional Law, Choudhry was asked to join other law experts at a conference in Kiev, Ukraine in July of 2017 to discuss the challenges in that country’s governing system. He gave his opinion and advice on the current situation there by stating that in order for the political system in Kiev to achieve stability, the leaders would have to collect and discuss options based on policy, because this will support the process of constitutional reform. He said that he felt the political parties in the country were weak, and that more democracy was needed there. After the discussion was over, he expressed how much of a privilege it was for him to have been able to talk about these issues with all the other law experts.

Sujit Choudhry also serves as a legal advisor to his native country of India, as well as to other countries, such as Libya, Egypt, South Africa and Sri Lanka, and he has had a number of articles, papers, reports and books published, some of which are, Constitutional Making and Migration of Constitutional Ideas (  Due to his vast knowledge and work in the area of comparative constitutional law, he has won various awards, like the Practitioner of the Year Award, which was presented to him by the South Asian Bar Association in 2011 ( In addition to his teaching duties at UC Berkeley’s School of Law, he is also the Director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions.

Sujit Choudhry Views On Constitutional Issues

On the 10th July 2017, Sujit discussed with other top experts about Ukrainian government presidential system. The constitutional experts also outlined the various legal challenges affecting the system. Sujit acts as a director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions. Global intergovernmental organizations among other multiple institutions supporting democracy hosted the workshop. Sujit Choudhry addressed the experts on the unstable state of democratization of Ukraine. Some of the great leaders who joined Sujit during the workshop included Sumit Bisarya from International IDEA, Thomas Sibelius from Dalarna University, and Vladimir Vasilenko who was the Human Rights representative among others. The leaders have vast knowledge and experience in constitutional matters. Sujit has acted as an advisor in the legal process around the world.

During the workshop, Sujit Choudhry mentioned the role and increased engagement of transitional democracies for constitutional changes. He emphasized the need for the thinkers and leaders to analyze and discuss policy options to enhance constitutional reforms. Constitution making attracts scholars from the entire world. The experts use case studies or relevant articles to gather information and provide evidence about the topic.

Role of Center of Constitutional Transitions

The institution generates and mobilizes knowledge which assists in building constitution. It assembles international experts who provide policy issues with supporting evidence. The experts offer a platform for research. The center partners with international think tanks, multinational companies, and NGOs to promote constitutional changes.
